Default clock source

The default clock source on the AVR's are the internal 1 Mhz RC oscillator. For most purposes you want to use an external crystal, which means you must remember to set the fuses appropriately.

The ATMega8, Port B and the STK500

All though the ATmega8 has one complete 8 bit port PB6 and PB7 are not wired to PB6 and PB7 on the PORTB header on the STK500.
